The presence of the Web and the introduction of immersive and collaborative computer technology in the teaching of foreign languages can help to re-create a relaxed cognitive environment and overcome the gap between formal and spontaneous learning.
However, it is important to consider the 'mode' in which technologies help to create a learning environment in which the cognitive and social aspects of the human - machine interaction are intertwined to form a single operating environment.
In this perspective the enveloping multimediality of the Web stimulates different types of awareness in the various parts of the brain slowly modifying processes of perception and cognitive strategies, and submitting them to constant stimuli from a multimedial habitat naturaliter. In this perspective, there is a close relationship between the grammars of the media, the functioning of the human sensory systems and the cognitive schemata that influence them.
The aim of this research study is to apply collaborative computer technology and multimedial environments to adult Foreign Language (FL) and Second Language (SL) teaching (in particular Italian as a foreign language), in order to develop and enhance dialogical and prosodic/intonational awareness through training in listening/production of sounds and intonation patterns with the support of speech analysis tools.
The main hypothesis on which the research is based, is that technology, normally used in individual training, can in fact maximize opportunities for immersive group learning, by recovering and extending modes of L1 language knowledge into SL teaching and learning, in accordance with Krashenâs theory of natural approach.
The data collected during the trial, which used authentic oral texts with ab initio students from the National University of Ireland - Galway, indicate that the implementation of audio-visual feedback helps learnÂŹers to improve their FL production and to get closer to the target utterance. This is done through the support of an immediate and easy-to-read visual image of the differences between L1 and FL.
The field of research of this paper is interdisciplinary and involves both Linguistics and Computer Assisted Language Learning. The field of the experiment concerns the teaching of Italian as FL in blended learning, therefore halfway between face-to-face and distance learning, through the integrated use of the perceptive and the instrumental method in the acquisition of intonation
MANAGING A MIXED SKILL CLASS
In a digital environment students need to manage different types
of skills - cognitive, emotive and manual. When working in a
mixed-skill class the differences between student abilities can
disrupt the rhythm and style of the learning process and demand
flexibility in the teaching approach that is adopted
Integrating the real and virtual world for academic language education in Second Life
This chapter focuses on a Second Language Acquisition (SLA) study conducted in virtual worlds that could help teachers in terms of knowledge about acquisition processes, in which technology is integration between formal and non formal education. The research comprises of two studies strongly focused on the development of Italian oral language proficiency. It was held within Second LifeÂŽ (SLâ˘)1 in order to explore the affordances of public spaces to enhance Intercultural Communicative Competence (ICC)2 and to stimulate the oral production through learnerâs engagement. Since 2007, a new pilot project, CafĂŠ Italia, was developed by Carmela DellâAria (aka Misy Ferraris) in Second LifeÂŽ. Starting from theory and research (SLA and Linguistics) the project leads to effective language learning practice. As matter of fact, the research moves to analyze learnersâ needs, to give a focus for instruction, to adapt technology to their needs through experimentation, and to evaluate the results
Pedagogical Practices for Virtual Worlds
As a result from activities carried out within Module 2 of the MUVEnation programme about exploring active learning approaches, we have created a collection of practices for teaching and learning in Virtual Worlds, organised in 21 chapters, classified in the following categories of instructional methods: Presentation, Demonstration, Discussion, Drill-and-practice, Tutorial, Cooperative Learning, Gaming, Simulation and Discovery.
The educational professionals who participated in the course worked in teams, but in some cases individually to map and describe the existing range of teaching practices in Second Life, and to draw a reflection about the elements for their success. Practices described include: lecture, multimedia presentation, demonstration, dialogic teaching and specifically debates and consensus building, but also other forms of discussion like seminars, symposia, syndicates, panel discussion, workshops and organized forums; brain storming, treasure hunts and virtual quests, learning by projects, self paced learning and self study, Labs (class/ fields), role play, virtual theatre and theatrical improvisation matches, peer tutoring and learning, Role playing, and simulation games
Educational Tools for Second Life: a handbook for educators in virtual worlds.
As a result of two collective activities organised during the MUVEnation programme, we have produced a collection of educational tools for Second Life. This collection has been produced in two stages. First, back in September 2008, 33 partcipants in the introductory module worked together in groups for the identification of more than 100 tools used for teaching and learning in Second Life. Later, in March 2009, 55 education professionals (lecturers, researchers, learning technologists and teachers) have collected, tested and fully described more than 150 tools. The result of this collective work has been transformed into a book, published as an Open Educational Resource under CC licence by attribution unported, so anyone is free to distribute without restrictions: adapt, translate, re-mix and improve it
